Blessed with a Harmonic, Michelle, in 1970 and around the same time with a new call as N2CQ. Part of the "pick your own" from the FCC at that time. (Free). Have been employed at Unisys (formerly Burroughs) Computers. Mostly specialized mainframes for the banking buisness. Retired from Federal Reserve Bank in Phila in Sep. 2000. Second Harmonic (Gregory) is now 6+ and definate ham interest, especially keying with sidetone. Even better with Rainbow Bridge in line for light. Interest in radio skips a generation apparently.

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: WAS (ca. 1959) as K4IHU, QRP-L 805 ARCI 9027 Norcal NJQRP SJRA

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: I was first licensed in 1954 at 14 yrs old. My QTH at that time was Rocky Mount, NC. My first rig was a HeathKit AT-1 running 20 watts and the receiver was a aircraft receiver which I bought for $5. I then operated 40M. Year later I got my General ticket and purchased a Globe Chief transmitter and a Hallicrafters 38C Receiver. All tubes of course. I received the WAS award(48 states at the time). OTHER ACTIVITIES: My other interest are Running, biking, computers, and photography.

JOB: I am a senior research associate with FMC Corporation in the Agricultural Products Group. I manage the NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Services. Ed Roswell, K2MGM

QTH: Lincroft, NJ

HAM INTERESTS: FM on 2 mtrs; SSB rarely, when necessary; CW on HF is most interest. Hi pwr, but have got the 38 Spcl and Rainbow tuner; will start on kits when I get the time & gumption to start winding the coils. Think it will be fun to take on Fla vacation.

John L. (Jake) Carter, N4UY

QTH: Vienna, VA

HAM INTERESTS: I operate mostly cw on 40, 30, 20 and 15 and chat some on the local repeaters. I do some contesting, generally SSB, but at 100 watts max and wire antennas, I'm pretty limited at what I can do. The contests I enjoy the most are the QRP-CW ones -- those organized by ARCI and ARS -- code speeds are reasonable, ops are pleasent (lots of QSOs end with TU 73) and my 5 watts and wire antennas are competitive. I intend to get into kit building this winter. I have 5 kits on hand -- just need to figure out how to do it.

STATION: My QRP rig is a Ten Tec Scout at min power. My big rig is a Yaesu FT 990 (also have an FT 101E sitting up in the office for listening). Antennas are 40 and 30m dipoles up about 35 ft, a 20m loop and a 20m vertical dipole. All antennas are wire, strung up in the trees and are very unobtrusive (a concession to the XYL). Also have the usual 2m stuff -- HT, mobile rig in shack and one in the truck.

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: Not many awards -- did get highest phone score for my county in last year's Virginia QSO party. Lots of clubs: QRP-L #821, G-QRP #9557, AK/QRP #175, NJ-QRP #74, NorCal#1457, ARCI #9392, FISTS #3450, ARRL, Vienna Wireless Society, Northern Virginia FM Assoc.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: Been a ham since October 1996. Passed my Novice and Tech Plus on October 12, and passed the rest of the exams in November '96. Made my first QSO on Dec 12, 1996. Married, one child, no pets, 4 cars.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: 4 cars include a '78 Mercedes 280 CE and a '71 XKE -- family, house projects, ham radio and foreign cars, that's it.

JOB: None -- retired CPA.

Bob Marsh, KB2SGM

QTH: W. Caldwell, NJ

NOTE: Bob became a Silent Key in February, 2002. All of us in the NJ-QRP club will miss him.

HAM INTERESTS: I'm into CW, QRP, (mostly on 80 & 40m), homebrewing & experimenting with radios and antennas. I’ve built an SW-40 and a Ten Tec 1208 20m/6m Transverter. I’m not too good about QSL cards unless I receive one (too lazy, I guess). Occasionally I'll try a contest or some DX, but I generally like to just get on with someone and chat.

STATION: Kenwood TS-850S/AT, Ten Tec Argosy (Low Power/QRP mode), Ten Tec Power Mite PM-3, Small Wonder SW-40 Kit rig, plus several "floating" Heathkits (HW-16, SB 301/401 "twins", SB-101) that make their way in and out of the shack. For antennas, there's a house mounted 35' mast with a refurbished Mosely TA-33 Jr. and CDE rotator, a new Radioworks Carolina Windom 80 in an "inverted U" configuration (great antenna!), homebrew 40 and 6m dipoles and a 2 element 6m quad on a TV rotator. There’s an Azden PCS-7000 2m that feeds into a stacked 5/8 wave vertical for local gabbing. I also worked MIR with it, though.

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: Member/Treasurer of West Essex ARC (WEARC) in Essex Fells, NJ. Member of NJ-QRP and QRP-L. Will be a member of FISTS in the very near future. Was a member of NJ/DE Navy MARS until recently, and participated in the last ever Area CW traffic net.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: I've been a ham since 1994, but have been interested in radio and electronics since my teens (in the early 60's). I got into it mainly to work CW and "tinker" with the equipment. I love to experiment with antenna systems, and am struggling to learn electronics and related theory. I'm still a General, but that's mainly because I'm too stubborn to learn the "answers" for the test. I'd like to actually know the material, too. I also enjoy helping other new hams get started, and promote the hobby whenever I can.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: I'm into computers and the internet. I have worked in Voice & Data Communications for around 13 years, and got started as a result of my computer "hobby". I spend a lot of time helping others doing repair work and solving their computer problems. I generally try to keep computers and radio as two seperate hobbies. I also recently got into metal detecting.

SOME PICS OF MY "STUFF":

Patrick J. Hoban N2ZVT

QTH: Wood-Ridge NJ

HAM INTERESTS: Up 'til now, mostly 2 meter FM. Dabbled with packet for a while, but until I can get another "dedicated" computer, packet has been on the back burner. Recently aquired some parts and am attempting to build a 49er. I upgraded my no-code tech to Tech plus last year, but with no rig I have not been on the HF bands as of yet. A new job, harmonic and the purchase of our first house in the last year has really slowed my operating time to almost nothing. Now that things are starting to settle(?), I want to get on the air. The 49er kit is my motivation. I love to build things. Mechanical, electrical, whatever.

STATION: Icom 21AT HT, Valor P55 antenna, KPC3, 35W 2 meter brick, tons of wire, and power supplies. And possible a 49er

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: Former member of the Skyview Amatuer Radio Club and Two Rivers Amatuer Radio Club in Pittsburgh PA

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: Always had an interest in mechanical and electrical things. Dis-assembly specialist! Born and lived the first 22 years of my life in NNJ. Did 6 years in the navy as an Electronics technician and nuclear reator operator. Stationed on the USS Enterprise CVN-65. After leaving the service, I started contracting to various nuclear power plants as a technician and technical writer. Spent 7 years in and around the Pittsburgh area. The birth of my son Michael gave me a different outlook on life. Decided to stop moving around, contract after contract. Received a job offer last December and knew it was time to return and settle "back home". My fiance and I just purchased our first home this June. I could not afford 10 acres of land in bergen county, so we bought a 4 bedroom colonial instead. Wedding plans for next October, and then maybe one more child.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: My first love is motorcycles. It takes most of my time in the summer months. Secretary of the Lucent Technologies Motorcycle Club, Whippany Chapter. Mechanic for an amatuer motorcycle road racing team. I ride a Honda CBR600F2. Love to take long trips on the bike. So far I have been through 23 states and Canada. Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Washington and some of the best road in the north east are just a few of the places I've been. Dream of buying a new Gold Wing some day. Computer interests, of course. And just recently I've developed a taste for home repair/improvements (I wonder where that came from?)

JOB: Technical writer/technician for Lucent Technologies. Currently working in the hardware development of new cell phone systems.

ANYTHING ELSE: Easy to get along with, I don't know everything, but I can make up lots of stuff. Love to read. Magazines, books, cereal boxes, anything.

Luis R. Anaya, N2ZXE

QTH: Piscataway, NJ 08854

HAM INTERESTS: Packet.

STATION: 2 Meter HT with Packet, Hopefully I'll be able to scrape some money to buy a decent rig.

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: NJ-QRP

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: I started about two years ago, however I have not been active due to several reasons. I mostly operate packet, I hope to do QRP code sometime soon.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Guitar Playing, Cycling, Working on my house the rest of the time.

JOB: Bellcore, Customer Service Installation Support and System Integration (In english, go there , and make the dang thing work).

ANYTHING ELSE: I have two cats (Unix and Curie)

Brian J. Keegan, KF2HC

QTH: Caldwell, NJ

HAM INTERESTS: 99.9% HF/CW. From home mostly 40 & 80. 15 when "active". I always start out with QRP power and QRO as needed. Rarely have to go over 50 watts. I like to experiment with wire antennas (more reading that building), operate from "remote" locations (mostly my backyard), dream about having 50 acres on top of a mountain somewhere with all of the trees in just the right spots, QRP contests, some building (at least I read alot about building). When traveling by car I like to pack a QRP set-up that usually consists of a radio, Hamstick antenna w/mag mount, and 40 meter dipole. (No tuner required for either.) I still use VHF packet for sending some messages and DXcluster even tho I have Internet access. As helpful as the Internet can be I'm believe it's one of the main factors contributing to the slow demise of Ham radio. (I don't want to start a debate, here.) Just recently became interested in solar and battery powered stations and have started to do some reading/learning about that.

STATION: Recently puchased a used Kenwood TS-450S. This is our "main" rig. Also have a Ten-Tec Argosy II which we were using as our main rig since finding it at a hamfest last July. Simple but quite efficent. I used it QRP for both CW and SSB Sweepstakes last year. Also still have my first HF rig, a Yaesu FT-101E to which I added the WARC bands mod. Haven't had it on the air much since buying the Argosy and I'm thinking about selling it at a hamfest next weekend. My QRP equipment consists of a MFJ-9040 w/filter and built-in keyer, NE-40/40, and a SWL-80 that's been used twice for solar powered bonus QSOs during Field Day. I consider the Argosy to be a QRP rig as well. I sometimes use a 7.5 AH gel cell to power the QRP gear. I have a small solar panel that puts out just under 1 amp of 12 VDC. Home antenna is a B&W trapped 40/80 meter inverted Vee plus whatever wire antenna I might be "testing" at the time. I use a Bencher, Vibroplex Original Presentation, or various straight keys depending on my mood. Stock hand mikes for the few times I'm on phone.

MEMBERSHIPS: I am currently the chief operating officer for the West Essex Amateur Radio Club (WEARC) but will start a term as president in September. WEARC member interests include QRP, contesting, DXing, antenna experimenting, and ragchewing yet computer talk seems to dominate much of our time together. I also belong to the NE-QRP and NJ-QRP. Oh yeah, I'm a member of the ARRL.

AWARDS: WAS, WAC, DXCC/CW and Mixed Mode, Ragchewer's Club (RCC), and my most treasured 1996 ARRL November Sweepstakes HUDSON DIVISION QRP/CW plaque. Also won the NNJ section for '96 SSB Sweeptakes which I'll never do again!

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: I've been a ham for 6 years, I think, and hold a Extra Class license. I'm 40 years old and am married to the most wonderful women alive...Ann, KB2YTL. (The fact that she's a ham has nothing to do with her being wonderful although it doesn't hurt). Ann has two children who live in California (Thank God!). We share our home with 2 cats, down from 3 this past June. I'm a home grown Jersey boy. Have always lived in NNJ.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Metal Detecting, guitar playing, own a Harley Electra Glide, driving to visit out of state friends or just a day in the country, yard work...

JOB: I am the Quality Control coordinator for a major CATV system in NJ. I've been in cable for over 16 years and NO, I do not sell black boxes, than you very much! Previous jobs have included installing commercial 2-way radio systems for police, fire, gov't, and private businesses (I mostly did base stations and repeater systems), truck driver/helper delivering computer systems and electronics (before PCs when disc drives were the size of washing machines and CPUs were twice as large as refridgerators), burglar alarm installer.

OTHER: Basically I like to enjoy life. I've learned to appreciate what I have and not to take things like my wife, home, friends, job, "toys"...etc. for granted. Although I'd like to be sitting on easy street I know I could be much worse off than I am. I treat others as I'd like to be treated. I mind my own business and expect others to do the same. If one of my friends needs me, I'm there. Simple as that. I have three sayings I like to share with people that more or less sum me up:
"Wherever you go, there you are"
"Don't ask the question unless you really want to hear the answer".
"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining".
... See you on the air!

Jeff Casey, NE2J

QTH: Setauket, NY

HAM INTERESTS: HF only, QRP only, CW only, at this time; kit building and modifying; homebrewing (sort of); experimenting with wire antennas; "noncompetitive" contesting at QRP power levels; trying to spend less time on the computer and more time on the air! Also, I'd like to get active on 2m and/or 70cm FM one of these days so I can QSO some of the local QRPers and maybe even generate more local interest in HF QRP.

STATION: TT Scout with final PA bypassed to make it essentially an Argo 556 (5w max), Norcal 40A/KC-1 (2w), MFJ 941E tuner, TT 254 tuner, 1965 vintage Swan 350 with fried power supply. Unbuilt kits :-( Rainbow tuner, Emtech ZM-1 tuner, OHR WM-2 wattmeter, Small Wonder Labs GM30 Antennas: various wires in trees, 40m hamstick and magnetic mount for mobile work; Keys: Most of the time I use an old Vibroplex single level paddle. Also have a new Vibroplex left-handed bug, but don't think I'll ever have the patience to develop a good fist with it! Station/work bench location: corner of basement

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: ARRL / ARS / NJQRP #72 / NorCal / QRP ARCI / QRP-L / LIQRP #1 -- "Founding member" of Long Island QRP Club; "Rag Chewers Club" (circa 1972)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: First licensed in 1972 at age 13 in Okla. City, OK. I was inactive from about 1980-1995, and probably wouldn't be active now if it weren't for the QRP-L phenomenon!

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Family (wife, 3 kids, assorted infra-human species); trying, often vainly, to fix stuff around the house.

JOB: For the past 10 years I've been a prof. in the business school at SUNY Stony Brook (although my phd is in psychology). Besides teaching, I serve as director of graduate studies and do research on the psychology of judgment and decision making.

HAM INTERESTS: Hmmm... homebrewing, contesting, SSB, some RTTY (contests), ATV, 1296 SSB/CW, some RS-12 work, 2m FM. Enjoy reading about antennas, but my town does not appreciate high-gain devices on the outside of houses.

STATION: Yikes... Main HF: TS-850, CL33 beam driven element, 40m dipole. Other HF station used mostly for an IF to the 1296 station: IC-735. Numerous 2/440 FM rigs, lots of TNCs (at least 10 at last count). 1296 via kit/homebrew transverter and associated little metal boxes. QRP stuff consists of HW-9, a few homebuilt transmitters and receivers. Now I just use the TS-850 turned down to 5 watts. 1296 antenna is a 45 element looper at 30 feet. All stuff is in a spare bedroom.

AWARDS & MEMBERSHIPS: SJRA member (past president), CBPRA (Camden-Burlington Packet Radio Assn [founder and past prez]). Currently joining the Packrats (Mt Airy VHF Club). Have been League member on and off since 1973. Only other club is NJQRP. I have a nice collection of minor wallpaper for various contests and also from a few clubs. Won SJRA's top award for outstanding contributions to SJRA/amateur radio in '94. Have been #1 in SS for Southern NJ twice: once in '93 for QRP CW (yeah, me) and last year for SSB low-power (100 watts). Also published in NCJ and act as their webmaster.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: Have been a ham since '74, age 11. Not very active most of the time until about 7 years ago when my work (network development) lead me into packet, which lead into the creation of a packet club, which lead into speaking about packet at other local clubs, which lead into joining SJRA, which lead into lots of activity on all modes. Have been married for 6 years to Sui (yes, "ess-you-eye"), N2OAX. She's not on the air. No kids. Two cats and a leopard gecko, none of them have cool names.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Not many. Running the business. My other big hobby is model railroading. Have a small HO layout in another spare bedroom and am slowly building an outdoor garden railroad. Actually, I spend many nights at SJRA committee meetings. Not really, but it sure seems that way! I'm also a member of the Marlton Village Merchants Assn (won't tell you the URL of our lame web site). Took piano lessons as a kid; all of the info was pushed out of the grey matter long ago.

JOB: I own an ISP: Water Wheel Systems. WWS was started in '91 as a consulting company, but switched to the ISP biz in September '94 (almost three years old now). Prior to that, I worked for several companies as a Software Engineer, mostly doing datacomm work on embedded systems. [Note: Bob's company hosted the NJQRP website for its first 10+ years... thanks tons Bob!]

Bill Marsh, K3AS

QTH: Marshallton, DE

BIOGRAPHY: First licensed as W2KTR in 1937 in Perth Amboy, NJ where I was active in the old Raritan Bay Radio Club which met in Tom Garretson's Packard dealership showroom. Tom was W2ASB. After WW2 lived in Plainfield and Greenbrook NJ before moving to Delaware in about 1972.

In my youth I was a Flight Radio Officer on the Boeing B314 Pan American Clippers and then Naval Air Transport Command PB2Y3's and Air Transport Command C-54's.

I have always been a QRPer, one reason was that my little single tube xtal oscillator didn't put out much power. There was a philosophical reason too, I always believed in low powered transmitters and high powered receivers.

Something happened to me about two years ago that profoundly affected my ham career. Two years ago my eyesight was almost perfect, but now due to the ravages of wet macular degeneration I am classified as legally blind. My peripheral vision is still pretty good. But think of what this does to a QRPer, I can't build kits any more, I always kept a paper log for all my ham activities including contests, but now I have to write letters about two inches high with a wide tipped pen in order to be able to see them,, and even then its tough. How can I keep a log and dupe sheet like that? Wow. I'm sure there is an answer, and I am working on it. Probably computer logging. I will be posting a letter on the list to see if there is anyone out there who has had a similar problem and how they handled it. This all happened very recently and I'm still not accustomed to the idea that I can't see like I used to. But I'm hoping to be a serious contender in QRPcontests again soon.
